Spend Less Time In The Office

Quote from Jeff Hoffman

I heard this quote the other day from business man, Jeff Hoffman, founder of booking.com & ubid.com, “Spend way less time in the office and way more time out in the world. Because the world is where all the problems are and the people in the world will teach you what they need you to build. Instead of inventing stuff and hoping people will buy it.”

What It Means To Me

Hoffman’s quote captures one of the reasons why I am on this Adventure Year, learning from the top international schools in Europe and Asia. I believe that, “out in the world”, I can learn more from school leaders, their problems, and strategies, than I can working at a school. This isn’t how I plan to spend the rest of my career, but it has been a powerful learning experience this year.

Innovators Get It

If you’re an innovator, you likely have a deep understanding of what the Hoffman quote means. You understand that innovation based on personal inspiration is good, but innovation based on demand, or as Hoffman puts it “problems”, is GREAT.

How Does It Apply To You?

Whether you’re a school leader, teacher, or support staff – get “out in the world” by…

  • Attending a great conference
  • Signing up to be on an visiting accreditation team
  • Visiting quality schools while your school is on break
  • Setting up virtual collaborative groups with others in your field or the field of education you’d like to learn about
