Gauging the Effectiveness of Academic Interventions

Many key metrics for schools revolve around learning. Think of the importance of metrics like internal exams, teacher evaluations, standardised tests, and university acceptances to the value, perception, branding, and marketing of your school. Wouldn’t it be great if school leaders had more information about what does and does not lead to effective learning?

Teaching and Learning Toolkit

To fill this need, a British organization called the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) created the Teaching and Learning Toolkit to summarize academic literature and rate the effectiveness of academic interventions on student learning.

The Toolkit uses three metrics to present academic evidence:

  1. Cost (British Pounds)
  2. Strength of the Evidence (Padlocks)
  3. Impact on Academic Achievement (Number in orange)

Not only is the toolkit helpful for leaders in the field of education, it’s laid out in an accessible manner to increase effectiveness.

Check out the Teaching & Learning Toolkit to learn more about the effectiveness of academic interventions such as: class size, collaborative learning, mentoring, feedback, homework, etc. In total there is valuable information related to 30 interventions.

Early Years Toolkit

For early childhood educators, the EEF also created an Early Years Toolkit using the same parameters and outlining 10 interventions such as earlier starting age, parental engagement, and play-based learning.
